A beautiful antique French gargoulette, water jug or orjol from the Provence region of France. Handmade back in the late half of the 19th century, it would have been used primarily as a water pitcher in the summer months, with the thick earthenware helping to keep it fresh and the unglazed bottom allowing for cooling evaporation. With its wonderful shape and gorgeous yellow colour, this antique cruche or pitcher has so much charm and history and comes complete with its lid, something which often goes missing. Condition is good, with the knocks and chips you'd want from a household item of this age. Interior is glazed, though with lots of patches where that has worn away over time. Measures approx 30cm (12") high to top of handle and 22cm (8 1/2") width from tip of spout to tip of handle. Weighs 1.8kg (just under 4lb).
