A beautiful fil de lin fine linen antique sheet from France with a hand-sewn central seam and two red stitched initials T R. Probably dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, this example is in a deep cream colour. These wonderful old sheets were made from locally grown flax and woven on looms which were about one metre wide, so two lengths were then sewn together to make one sheet. If the sheet was later damaged, one half could be replaced. Condition is good and clean overall. There are some splits along the central seam, see pictures, and a few spots along the hem. The picture shows it on top of a UK kingsize bed. Measures approx 294cm (9'6") long x 204cm (6'7") wide. Weighs 1.65kg (3lb 6oz).
