A fabulous and unusually colourful glazed terracotta jug from the eastern Savoie region of France, and probably dating from the late 19th century. Standing 17.5cm (7") high, the sugar-bag blue background has been decorated with stylised grapes and vine leaves in green, cream, deep red and creamy yellow. The interior is also glazed in a creamy yellow, and now has wonderful crazing. Entirely hand-made, this absolutely gorgeous antique piece has all the knocks and signs of use you'd want from a household object of this age, especially round the rim, but without any cracks. Still watertight, it holds about 1.4 litres. The maximum width is 17cm and the weight is 890g.
