Hand-coloured engravings on paper, plate numbers 92. 93, 94 and 96 from an 1841 volume of Birds from Buffon's natural history. Buffon (1707 to 1788) was an extremely influential French naturalist who preceded Charles Darwin, and published 36 volumes of known animals, birds, rocks and minerals, along with scientific observations and hypotheses of biodiversity in the 18th century. These four prints were drawn by Adam, engraved by Gelée, Beaupré, P. Colin and Lalaisse, then tinted by hand. Each print measures 18cm wide by 27.5cm high. (7" x 11").
