This very striking antique terracotta two-handled pot was primarily used for making confit, a method of preserving food, and would have been hand-made in the Perigord region of south-west France. The rich near-black brown glaze has an iridescence to it, and the white glazed interior is a fabulous contrast. These pots go back a long way, and this example could be from as early as the 18th century, though more commonly they are from the 19th century. As an everyday household item, this one shows all the signs of wear and tear you'd expect. This one has some wear to the white glaze at the very bottom, showing the terracotta underneath. Measures approx 20cm high and 22cm from handle to handle. Weighs1.5kg.
