This gorgeous antique French terracotta water jug, decorated in slipware with fabulous swirls, wiggly lines and leaves, is from the Saône region of eastern France. Entirely handmade and probably dating from the second half of the 19th century. Also known as a gargoulette, orjol or cruche, this red ware pot has an unglazed interior and carrying handle, so was most likely used for carrying water in the summer months, with the thick earthenware helping to keep it fresh and cool. Similar in style to the more common Provence jugs with their bright yellow or green glaze, each of these glorious pitchers is unique, and this one is particularly lovely with all its exuberant swirls. Condition is good, with just the knocks and chips you'd want from a household item of this age but no cracks. It is still watertight. Measures approx 31cm (12") high to top of handle by 25cm (10") width from tip of spout to tip of handle. Weighs 2.43kg (5lb 3oz).
