A lovely antique French slipware terracotta water jug from the Saône region of eastern France, handmade back in the late half of the 19th century.  This pottery jug, also known as a gargoulette, orjol or cruche, has an unglazed interior, so was most likely used for carrying water in the summer months, with the thick earthenware helping to keep it fresh.  Similar in style to the more common Provence jugs with their bright yellow or green glaze, each of these beautiful handmade antique pitchers is unique.  Some have swirls and curls, but this one has simple straight lines of slipware.  Condition is good, with the knocks and chips you'd want from a household item of this age, although some more recent looking chips around the base.  Measures approx 31cm high to top of handle by 23cm width from tip of spout to tip of handle.  Weighs 2.23kg.
